How to Buy Crypto on Base

Step-by-step guide for purchasing your first crypto on the Base chain.

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 chain built by Coinbase. It offers fast transactions and low fees while inheriting the security of Ethereum. Here is how to get started buying crypto on Base in four simple steps.

Step 1: Buy ETH on a Centralized Exchange

Create an account on a reputable centralized exchange like Coinbase, Binance, or Kraken. Complete their identity verification process (KYC), then purchase ETH (Ethereum) using your preferred payment method such as bank transfer, credit card, or Apple Pay. ETH is the native currency you will need for gas fees and swapping on Base.

Step 2: Set Up MetaMask

Install the MetaMask browser extension from metamask.io (or the mobile app). Create a new wallet and carefully write down your 12-word seed phrase on paper. Never store it digitally or share it with anyone. This seed phrase is the master key to your funds. Once your wallet is set up, add the Base network to MetaMask (see our Setting Up Your Wallet guide for details).

Step 3: Send ETH to Your Wallet

In MetaMask, copy your wallet address (starts with 0x). Go back to your exchange, navigate to the withdraw or send section, paste your MetaMask address, and send your ETH. Double-check the address before confirming. If your exchange supports Base network withdrawals, select Base as the network to save on fees. Otherwise, send on Ethereum mainnet and bridge in the next step.

Step 4: Bridge to Base (If Needed)

If you sent ETH on Ethereum mainnet, you need to bridge it to Base. Visit bridge.base.org, connect your MetaMask, select the amount to bridge, and confirm. The process takes about 10 minutes. Once your ETH is on Base, you can swap it for any token on Base using a DEX like Uniswap or directly through the DeadBox ecosystem.

Beware of Scams

Never share your seed phrase with anyone. No legitimate service will ever ask for it. Always verify website URLs before connecting your wallet. Bookmark official sites like dead.box and only use links from verified sources. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
